Stenball Group — The Swallow Pub scaffolding and roof access works

The Swallow pub in Havant required comprehensive scaffolding solutions to enable essential roof maintenance across its mixed roofing configuration. Located at 500 Dunsbury Way, PO9 5BL, this commercial hospitality property presented the typical access challenges of a multi-level building with chimney stacks, dormer windows, and flat roof sections requiring simultaneous attention. The work was commissioned by Stenball Group as both client and principal contractor, demanding coordination between roofing operations and ongoing business requirements.

The scope encompassed access scaffolding to the chimney on the building's side elevation, providing safe working platforms to reach the ridge line for maintenance operations. Additional complexity arose from the need to service dormer windows positioned above the flat roof section, requiring carefully planned scaffold positioning to avoid operational conflicts. Edge protection systems were specified for the flat roof areas, ensuring compliance with working at height regulations while enabling cleaning and maintenance works across the lower level sections.

Spurway Scaffolding Ltd executed the installation using NASC TG20:13 and BS EN12811-1 compliant systems, with all structures designed for appropriate load classifications and bay spacing requirements. The scaffold configuration incorporated secure ladder access, proper platform board arrangements, and systematic tying methods to ensure structural integrity throughout the works period. Risk assessment documentation covered working at height protocols, erection and dismantling procedures, and general scaffold access requirements, with designated supervision arrangements and emergency procedures established for site operations.

The scaffolding was erected and dismantled as single operations to minimise disruption to the commercial premises, with statutory 7-day inspections scheduled throughout the works period. All operatives held relevant CISRS certification cards, ensuring competency in scaffold erection and safety protocols. The project delivered compliant access solutions enabling roof maintenance works to proceed safely and efficiently, with proper handover procedures and user guidance provided to ensure continued safe utilisation of the temporary works installations.
